Podgorica city buses take €35,000 hit from thrown stones

GP Putevi says seven municipal buses have been damaged since January, forcing repairs that can thin the capital’s timetable.

Seven buses run by Podgorica’s municipal operator have been struck by stones since the start of the year, in separate parts of the city. Stefan Vešović, procurist of GP Putevi, told RTV Podgorica that the bill is about €35,000.

Vehicles that need repair are taken off the road. That squeezes a fleet already counted at 86 buses plus a handful of spares, and it can cut the number of departures. The company is covering current gaps with reserve buses so riders do not feel the loss, while warning that further breakdowns or attacks could shrink the schedule.

After a quiet stretch of about three months in summer, attacks returned in September and October. Vešović said the latest case is the seventh this year: one in September, after school resumed, and another a few days before his remarks. The newest damaged bus will stay out of service while it is fixed.

The incidents are spread across more than one neighbourhood. Vešović said the €35,000 already paid is a serious sum, that every case has been reported to police, and that the company is waiting for a response. He also said the operator is short of about 20 drivers, so any bus pulled from rotation makes planning harder.

The buses carry insurance and cameras. Staff warn that a rising claims record can push the next insurance price higher, beyond the cost of each repair. They want police to identify those responsible and are asking residents, especially parents, to help stop further attacks.
