Port of Helsingborg has ordered two electric reach stackers from Kalmar, expanding the role of battery-powered equipment in a sector where operators work around heavy cargo, confined yards and tightly controlled movements.
Reach stackers are used to lift and position shipping containers, making precision and dependable operation central to port safety. The new machines will bring electric propulsion to work traditionally associated with diesel-powered handling equipment.
The order reflects a broader shift among port operators towards electrifying vehicles and machinery that operate within defined sites. These locations can be well suited to electric equipment because working routes, charging arrangements and daily duties are more predictable than on public roads.
Details including delivery timing, battery capacity and operational deployment were not provided in the announcement. The order was reported by Electrek.
For drivers and freight operators, cleaner cargo-handling equipment may matter beyond the port gate: ports form a critical link between sea transport and road logistics, where efficient container transfers help keep onward journeys organised.
